How to read the numbers
All figures so far come from the U.S. Census Bureau and are shown exactly as published. Restaurant counts are by USPS ZIP code (ZIP Code Business Patterns) and population by ZIP Code Tabulation Area; the two usually, but not always, describe the same area. From the 2017 release the Census withholds small ZIP-level cells, so recent years cover fewer ZIPs than earlier ones — that is a publishing change, not closures. BMIE never fills a gap with an estimate without saying so.
